THE SONG OF MONSTER |

a collaborative project with Jianfei Zhao

Nothing is improbable, and nothing is peculiar. There had exist creaturesthat possibly existed and there had occurred events that possibly occurred. If you could see from a bird’s eye, you will find a mountain sitting at thecenter of the city. And if the weather is clear, you would find the mountainnot a mountain.

It is a MONSTER.

You are right, you are undeniably sober, and the visual information presentedgoes through your retina to your cerebral cortex. You see this translucent yetsturdy creature as a massive organ-less, cross-gendered body. It nests onthe centrum of the city, shrouding the relics of architectures built before theMillennium, like a colonists’ tent, and like a skin.

Shenzhen 2028

Once called “garden city,” this little Southern city is no longer young. For thepast decades, it has been fed with circuit boards, codes, electronic power; And numerous skyscrapers had grown into a urban forest. But where did themonster come from? The answer is GangXia, one of the most notoriousslum in Shenzhen. You encounter kitschy landlords adorning their terracewith bungled Rococo reliefs and realistic southeast Asian Buddha’s hands. But these building owners do not inhabit with their tacky taste, they luxuriatein the capsules, spending their times reclining on their holder and survivingwith catheter going under their skin. GangXia, housing worldwide refugeeswho share the minimum rent in Shenzhen, is the embryo of the MONSTER.

Since 2018, Shenzhen locals have been taking steps into a cyber-industrialsociety. They have dumped their old-fashioned furniture, inferiorconstruction materials, abandoned railways, and welcomed the time-tunnelsand single-casted spaceship. As the night falls, among the emptiness of theexterior, junk-eating MONSTERS appeared. Starting from GangXia, theseMONSTERS nourish their bodies with urban refuse and homeless peopletaking refuge. It have been becoming larger and larger. They have beeninvading Shenzhen, from one urban village to another, with their longantenna during the darkness, and lock their translucent skins and burgundyheart before the first light shines in the East.

--------------------------

Chapter 1 LULLABY

GangXia had given birth to me,

I thank them. I thank their great ship and thank their teeth growing along the branches

Every morning I was awaken in staring at GangXia

It is the tribe I project my love-sick and hatred

Underneath there is dust, is earth, is typhoon; dense tiles, thick and tight transparentbones, tearful South Sea

It is indestructible regeneration, is Fermi’s paradox, its message from Arecibo, it is baldold man, it is newborn, petrified coconut trees, and wasted seafood

Chapter 2  LIFE RHAPSODY

Bulky clumsy octopus antennaeRopy bizarre toad inner-wallTurbid dense supercritical waterFlorid aesthetic golden shellHow much did NATURE create?

Everything, and everything it isCircuits ensnaring the edifices,Outside magnetic fields smearing the tarmacCellular automatons speckling the homesTime-tunnels protruding from the sky

A beam of light, no thought, no ecstasyA pile of sand, no reason, no grief

Chapter 3 NOCTURNE

I close my heavy mechanical eyes, and its power slowly contracts Breathe, luminescence, like candle light in its last second
Order and emotions in my life,
Swims in darkness, in data ports, in liquid metal In tight cyberspace, it seems to have come to a stagnation Symphony composed by pills, prosthetics and neurons
Sprawls like scaffold, shines like scales. It frolics in gloomy buildings,
And runs down the spine of a turbo engine
Pouring down from filthy clouds
Overflowing edifices:
All corpse, prosthetics, letters, control What is it?
It is I, it is the hot spring of my gene However I belong to the deep night,
Am slave, an inextricable captive, like fangs belonging to oral cavity I push the bearing of the groundwork, and the edifice starts to dazzle Instrument starts to cantillate the bible in warped tones
I’m the son of twilight, enthralled by the maid of dawn.
I shall covet, but must not demand
Because in between it is night’s endless deathbed.

Are you expecting a hackneyed ending of the story as Shenzhen localseventually wake up to reality and generate ethos to overcome theMONSTERS? Sadly No. They never realize and will never be able to opentheir lazy eyes as they lie on the beds of their sustainability capsules.Besides the MONSTERS, the only spirited creatures—urban villagers—areswallowed. Maybe there will be an uprising, or they will remain repose, till theend of the world.
