Mezzanine | 夹层

“Mezzanine”

Pronunciation: /ˈ mɛzəniːn/

A low storey between two others in a building, typically between the ground and first floors.

This student lounge is located at the first floor of ISC building on the Pratt Brooklyn campus. The lounge is designed to provide opportunity for students from different majors to have a place to hangout before class or waiting for printing job and encourages them to socialize. Maintaining  the existing programs : a lecture hall and a copy center, the lounge also extends horizontally and vertically to incorporate lounging areas, a theater and a gallery to exhibit students’ works. By introducing a ramp/stairs, the different programs located on different levels are connecting interior with exterior, eliminating the disconnection due to the level difference. The programs are interlocked physically, but visually obstructed to various degrees. The glass facade distinguishes itself from the existing site and encourages conversations between the interior and the exterior.
